We are so thrilled with the story of our Rebel Washboard!
Originally washboards were believed to have been made from wood only, dating back to the late 18th Century. The wooden bars were then replaced with ribbed metal sheeting as this lasted longer, however during WWII, when metal was in short supply, glass washboards were the most sustainable option.
As we are hugely committed to pushing the sustainable boundaries, and who knows seeing the end of the 'washing machine' we love how upcycled whisky barrel staves and repurposed privacy glass window panes today in 2021 make the most special washboard. But with like everything we create and curate it has more than one use! This could be a beautiful wall hanging as well as a washboard, but also a serving platter (we love a good strong cheese and Scottish oatcake) and yet a delicate bathroom dish to neatly store your plastic free toiletries.
Each washboard has been made with upcycled materials in Scotland with our Scottish artisan friends, Angels' Share Glass Ltd, who are based in Stirling. They have also been coated in a food safe raw linseed oil.
At our mill each board has been hot iron branded by hand, with our iconic marque, the symbol of a Prickly Thistle Rebel! Plus all washboards carry a limited edition mark, in all centuries to come only 140 of these will ever exist.
Dimensions - 40cm length, 23.5cm width and 4cm depth
All washboards will be packed with recycled kraft materials to ensure the glass is securely protected when travelling home to you. Also each washboard will be stowed in one of our organic cotton tote bags as an extra layer of protection.
