Carefully replicated by our skilled artisan makers, this iconic historical tartan was the fabric of Isabella MacTavish’s wedding dress, which she wore to marry Malcolm Fraser just outside of Inverness in 1785.
The original dress is one of the only complete garments existing today that expresses tartan in womenswear - an area of historic Highland fashion that is relatively unknown, and indeed something which Prickly Thistle is passionately reviving.
This special replica tartan was woven in 2019 for Rebecca Old of Timesmith Dressmaking, who recreated this gown on her quest to learn more about its construction and share valuable insight into the work of female dressmakers in the Highlands.

Clare measured me in the Inverness Rebel Row store and had it made for me. I couldn’t wait for my package to arrive here in Chicago. I love my beautiful dark blue tartan maxi kilt!
Warmly greeted at store. Incredible items showing the quality and skills of the weavers invoved! Love my jacket!!
Love your tartans and clothing designs. Please keep up the great work!
Brilliant shop and driven by Purpose. Great to meet Clare there and see what she and her team have created
Totally beautiful shop with totally beautiful products.
It started with the Witches of Scotland scarf, my “gateway”item, it is so beautiful, and the highest quality material and construction imaginable. From there, crouched by my phone at 5 a.m. on the days new items drop, I ordered the drape kilt, and the big scarf. Totally addicted to the style and fit, and the integrity of the weaving process and design at Prickly Thistle is unparalleled. You have a fan for life! Looking forward to the Rebel Row experience in April!
Really friendly welcome, really helpful and knowledgeable about the products and helpful on other shops, bars and restaurants in Inverness.
I have lived in the US for 30 years but I grew up in Inverness. Went into the store last summer with my mum as we liked what we saw from the window. The minute I put the kilt on I knew I would wear it forever. It felt like it was made for me. It has been amazing to wear even in Houston where the temperature gets to 100. So comfy, not sweaty, goes with everything I own. I wear it several times a week as an elementary school teacher. I wear it hiking. I dress it up and wear it for a fancy dinner.
Rebel Row is the main reason I visited Inverness while in Scotland. It was so great to see their clothing on person and try everything on. I now own several pieces of truly unique and high quality items I can cherish forever. Can’t wait until they website is updated (which I’ve been told is hopefully by January) so I can keep dreaming of more pieces. Both women that helped me were wonderful.
I have been waiting a year to visit this store! I love what it represents and what it stands for! Plus the clothing is unique and cool!
I mean, where to start! Such fabulous people, amazing vision and clothing that is just, astounding! I mean, astounding.
I ordered a custom Wild Robe from Prickly Thistle, and it took a while to narrow down the right tartan, but was treated with patience and encouragement through the entire process. Once chosen, the garments were made quickly, shipped efficiently, and though mine needed some alterations, it was love at first sight!
Clare and Rochelle managed their way through, were just so amazing to work with, and I can only highly, highly recommend a visit to their site, and to their shop on Rebel Row (Union St, Inverness).
From the first moment I stepped into the shop to verify measurements for the alterations, to the last time we stepped out, it just felt so warm and welcoming.
Brilliant experience!!!!
Absolutely adore jumper.
Great experience from start to finish! Can't say enough good things about the whole Rebel Row crew and the beautiful tartan. A must see in Inverness and a legit reason to go to Inverness even if it's not on your itinerary!
