  • @Clare Campbell Thanks, Clare, for this idea! I certainly need some laughs with recent geopolitical events. Given my last comments regarding space-related natural fiber textiles, I thought the below meme might be appropriate. The iconic space suit and assessories offer many advantages, but some disadvantages too. Much of the ensemble is composed of synthetic materials, which may change in the future with adavnces in natural materials. That said, the spacehelmet shield or visor is typically covered with a natural metal gold glaze to help block dangerous solar radiation. Other metals are used in suit fabric, such as iron-based stainless steel mesh. The helmet and its gold-coated visor may cause some problems when on a moonwalk!

    Moonwalk and Nose Itch

  • @Kevin Clark thanks for sharing this 😄 and indeed what are we heading for..... if we cannot learn to protect this planet we are only but going to repeat this on other planets, and yes itchy noses will be a thing amongst many many other problems.... #learntolovetheplanetwehave x

  • @Clare Campbell Thanks for the reply. Yes, indeed, what may we be heading for? Space junk from deployed satellites and other platforms now heavily clutters the space of low Earth orbit. We fill the Earth full of our garbage. And, we may be looking toward the deeper solar system to do likewise. Thankfully, the UN, NASA, ESA, and other organizations take seriously the need for improved planetary protection on Earth and beyond. But, much more must be done. Creating new and repurposing old natural textiles that meet space fabric performance standards will help to drive possible net-zero polution standards on Earth and in space or extrerrestrial environments.

  • @Clare Campbell I once studied the intelligence, neurophysiology, and behavior of nonhuman primates. As we move through the rainy Autumn in the US Pacific Northwest, I began thinking about the clever tool manufacturing and use of great apes. The below photo of an adult Orangutan, among other documentation, should remind us of the unique, utilitarian fashion displays created by the modification of natural fiber leaves. I suppose, however, that it is fortunate wild Orangutans do not encounter snow in their native environments. I'm not sure they could craft a warm winter beanie, although they can weave impressive nests from grasses, leaves, and other natural materials.
